DOWNERS GROVE, ILL. — Sara Lee Corp. is exiting the kosher meat business. It announced the closing of its processing facility in Chicago, and discontinuation of processing and distribution of the products made under all of its kosher meat brands, including Best’s Kosher, Sinai Kosher, Shofar and Wilno, according to the company. The facility will close on or before Jan. 30, 2009.

"This decision was made after careful consideration of our strategic, long-term plan, which focuses on categories where we have a strategic competitive advantage," said C.J. Fraleigh, chief operating officer.

Once operations at the Chicago facility are discontinued, the company plans to put it up for sale.
