Nestle opens clinical research center

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND – Nestle S.A. has brought the management of its global clinical trials program to Lausanne and opened its Clinical Development Unit. The purpose of the C.D.U. is to centralize the company’s efforts to evaluate the impact of its foods and ingredients on human biology and health.

“Our clinical development work ultimately provides the scientific evidence as to whether our ingredients, new products, and product reformulations are effective in delivering consumer benefits,” said Werner Bauer, chief technology officer at Nestle. “The new C.D.U. is a strategic fit with our research and development commitment to provide innovative solutions for nutrition, health and wellness.”

The C.D.U. features a metabolic unit for metabolic studies in healthy people, as well in those with health conditions such as obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis. It will meet the company’s growing demand for in-house nutrition studies following the establishment of the Nestle Institute of Health Sciences and Nestle Health Science in 2010.

The goals of the Institute of Health Sciences and Nestle Health Science are to develop the areas of personalized health science nutrition to prevent and treat health conditions, according to the company.

Nestle added that the C.D.U.’s location will enable its researchers to work closely with other Nestle scientists from the Nestle Research Center and from the Nestle Institute of Health Sciences, which are also based in Lausanne.
