MONTREAL — Saputo Inc. on Wednesday said it will close its cheese manufacturing plant in Peru, Ind., on May 15 as part of its strategy to better position itself to respond to the current market volatility experienced in the United States.

Saputo said 71 employees will be affected, though each of them will be given the possibility to transfer to company plants elsewhere.

"Costs connected with the closure will be minimal and the future impact on the company’s profitability is almost neutral," Saputo said.

Saputo, the largest dairy processor in Canada, manufactures products in 45 plants across the Americas and in Europe.

In March, Saputo Inc. closed its cheese and byproduct manufacturing plant in Whitehall, Pa. Next month, the company is expected to close its cheese manufacturing plant in Harrowsmith, Ont. Operations from both facilities are being integrated into those of other Saputo facilities.
