Acid in skim milk may reduce body weight

Conjugated linoleic acid in skim milk significantly reduces body fat mass in overweight subjects, according to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition. The results indicate C.L.A. may be beneficial in body weight management and fat management when taken as a functional food or supplement.

Researchers led by Dr. Amalia Lafuente from the Department of Famacologia y Quimica Terapeutica at the Universidad de Barcelona in Spain conducted the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention trial. It involved 60 overweight men and women between the ages of 35 and 65. Over a 12-week period, they received a daily intake of 500 milliliters of skimmed milk fortified with 3 grams of Tonalin C.L.A. from Cognis, Monheim, Germany, or 500 milliliters of a placebo milk.

The results showed a significant 3% reduction of body fat mass in the overweight group taking the milk fortified with Tonalin C.L.A.

"These findings are especially exciting in light of the weight management platform that has evolved in the dairy industry based on mounting scientific evidence," said Dr. David Cai, Ph.D., senior scientist for Cognis Nutrition & Health. "Dairy products are excellent carriers for C.L.A., considering taste, color, texture, processing and product development issues.

"Formulators will find C.L.A. to be a health-enhancing ingredient that can be added to a dairy product without adversely affecting the sensory characteristics of the product."
