April milk production up slightly

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.9 billion lbs during April, up slightly from the same month of 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest report on milk production.

Revised production figures for March indicated a 0.1% increase from March 2008. Last month, March output was preliminarily estimated by the U.S.D.A. to be down 0.2% from a year earlier.

Production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,758 lbs in April, which was 1 lb above April of 2008. The number of milk cows on U.S. farms in April totaled 8.48 million head, which was 3,000 head less than in April of last year and 2,000 head less than in March of this year.
