May milk production up 1.1% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.9 billion lbs in May, which was up 1.1% from the same month of the previous year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

Production per cow in the 23 states averaged 1,795 lbs in May, which was 13 lbs more than in May 2006. Additionally, there were 8.28 million head of milk cows on farms in the 23 states, which represented a 26,000 head increase compared with May 2006 and a 3,000 head increase compared with April 2007.

April’s production was revised to 14.5 billion lbs, which was up 1.7% from April 2006. The revision was an increase of 14 million lbs, or .1%, from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
