September milk outturn up 3.1% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 13.7 billion lbs in September, which was up 3.1% from the same month of 2006, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

Production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,644 lbs in September, which was 31 lbs more than in September 2006. Additionally, there were 8.34 million milk cows on farms in the 23 states, which was a 91,000 head increase from September 2006 and a 12,000 head increase from August 2007.

Milk production for August was unrevised at 14.3 billion lbs, which was up 3.6% from August 2006.
