May egg product up 3% from 2009

WASHINGTON — The total amount of edible liquid product from shell eggs broken in May was 226,536,000 lbs, up 1% from April and up 3% from a year ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Egg Products report.

May production of edible whole egg was 143,923,000 lbs, up 5% from May 2009; liquid whites were 55,479,000 lbs, up 1%; liquid yolks were 27,134,000 lbs, down 2%; and inedible product was 19,503,000 lbs, up 5%.

Edible liquid product produced during the January-May period was 1,067,751,000 lbs, up 1% from the same period of the previous year, the U.S.D.A. said. Liquid whole eggs totaled 675,869,000 lbs, up 1% from the previous year; liquid whites were 261,104,000 lbs, up 3%; liquid yolks were 130,778,000 lbs, up slightly; and inedible product was 93,732,000 lbs, up 4%.

Shell eggs broken in May totaled 171,818,000 dozen, up slightly from April and up 2% form May 2009. Shell eggs broken in the January-May period totaled 816,797,000 dozen, up 1% from the same period of the previous year.
