August turkey, cheese, egg, red meat stocks up

WASHINGTON — Turkey, cheese, butter, egg and red meat stocks in freezers on Aug. 31 were higher than year-earlier levels, but chicken, fruit and vegetable stocks were lower, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Cold Storage report.

Natural cheese stocks on Aug. 31 were 1,059,147,000 lbs, down 2% from 1,083,198,000 lbs in July but up slightly from 1,058,957,000 lbs in August 2010, the U.S.D.A. said. Butter stocks totaled 165,623,000 lbs, down 12% from 187,796,000 lbs in July but up 7% from 155,253,000 lbs during the previous year.

Total chicken stocks were 702,229,000 lbs, down 7% from 757,114,000 lbs in July and down slightly from 705,736,000 lbs in August 2010. Frozen turkey stocks were 523,702,000 lbs in August, down slightly from 524,846,000 lbs in July but up 4% from 502,175,000 lbs in August 2010.

Total frozen red meat supplies were 894,992,000 lbs, up slightly from July and up 11% from August 2010. Frozen pork stocks totaled 440,666,000 lbs, down 3% from July but up 13% from August 2010. Frozen pork belly stocks were 15,143,000, down 49% from August but up 110% from August 2010. Beef stocks in freezers totaled 429,151,000 lbs, up 3% from July and up 11% from August 2010.

Frozen egg stocks on Aug. 31 totaled 31,002,000 lbs, down 9% from July but up 26% from August 2010. Stocks of egg whites were 3,745,000 lbs, up 12% from July and up 19% from August 2010. Frozen egg yolk stocks were 1,300,000 lbs, down 48% from July but up 118% from August 2010. Whole and mixed egg stocks were 8,297,000 lbs, down 5% from July but up 14% from last year. Unclassified egg stocks were 17,660,000 lbs, down 9% from July but up 29% from August 2010.

Stocks of frozen french fries on Aug. 31 were 754,559,000 lbs, up 6% from July but down 8% from August 2010. Frozen vegetable stocks (excluding potatoes) totaled 1,995,166,000 lbs, up 21% from July but down 12% from August 2010.

Stocks of frozen orange juice concentrate on Aug. 31, 2011, were 641,507,000 lbs, down 12% from July and down 43% from August 2010. Stocks of all types of frozen fruit on Aug. 31 were 1,055,212,000 lbs, up 11% from July but down 6% from the previous year.
