Commercial red meat production up 4% in May

WASHINGTON — Commercial red meat production was record large for May at 4,222 million lbs, up 4% from 4,076 million lbs in May 2007 but down 2% from 4,297 million lbs in April 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Livestock Slaughter report (click here to read report).

Beef production was 2,380 million lbs in May, up 4% from 2,285 million lbs in May 2007 and up 6% from 2,255 million lbs in April 2008.

Pork production was 1,816 million lbs, up 3% from 1,763 million lbs in May 2007 but down 10% from 2,015 million lbs in April 2008.

Total commercial red meat production for the January-May period was 20,993 million lbs, up 7% from 19,551 million lbs during the same period a year ago.
