Commercial red meat production up 8% in July

WASHINGTON — Commercial red meat production in July totaled 4,252 million lbs, up 8% from 3,940 million lbs in July 2007 and up 5% from 4,050 million lbs in June 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Livestock Slaughter report (click here to read report).

Beef production was 2,373 million lbs in July, up 5% from 2,257 million lbs in July 2007 and up 5% from 2,263 million lbs in June 2008.

Pork production was 1,853 million lbs, up 12% from 1,660 million lbs in July 2007 and up 5% from 1,762 million lbs in June 2008.

Total commercial red meat production for the January – July period was 29,295 million lbs, up 6% from 27,519 million lbs during the same period of the previous year. FBN
