May milk outturn up 3.4% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.4 billion lbs in May, up 3.4% from the same month of 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

Production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,816 lbs in May, which was 25 lbs more than in May 2007. Additionally, there were 8.46 million milk cows on farms in the 23 states, which was a 162,000-head increase from May 2007 and a 12,000-head increase from April 2008.

Milk production for April was revised to 14.8 billion lbs, up 2.6% from April 2007 and an increase of 6 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
