September milk outturn up 1.9% from year ago

WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14 billion lbs in September, up 1.9% from the same month of 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report (click here to read report).

In September, production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,652 lbs, which was 7 lbs above September 2007. Additionally, there were 8.46 million cows on farms in the 23 states, which was 118,000 heads more than September 2007 but an 8,000-head decrease from August 2008.

Milk production for August was revised to 14.6 billion lbs, up 1.7% from August 2007 and an increase of 24 million lbs from last month’s preliminary estimate.
