A study will examine the effects of prebiotic infant formula supplemented with Beneo Synergy 1 on the development of the neonatal immune system and the incidence of allergy in infants. The study is part of the EARNEST project funded by the European Union. Orafti Active Food Ingredients, Tienen, Belgium, offers Beneo Synergy 1, an oligofructose-enriched inulin.

"The study will investigate early nutrition programming using an approach that integrates knowledge from randomized controlled trials, prospective observational studies, as well as animal, cellular and molecular techniques," said Douwina Bosscher, nutrition research manager at Orafti. "It is hoped that the conclusion of the study in 2010 will enable a better understanding of the extent in which nutritional influences in early life can modulate a person’s development, metabolism and health in adulthood."

Prebiotic ingredients like inulin and oligofructose may stimulate the growth and activity of healthy bacteria bifidobacteria and lactobacilli to improve gut health and modulate immune response.
