Small players, big ideas

Small companies are having a huge impact on new product development and trends. Kale, for example, has catapulted into superfood superstardom; however, the vast majority (96%) of all products launched last year featuring kale came from small companies, Ms. Williams said.

“A lot of these small entrepreneurs have really become the thought leaders in terms of what’s driving all these trends, and that’s having a huge impact on what ingredients are being used and the social causes being promoted,” she said.
