CINCINNATI — The Kroger Co. and its culinary development team are introducing a new restaurant concept, Kitchen 1883, which will offer “a fresh take on new American comfort food” featuring a blend of American and international flavors, the company said.

“With Kitchen 1883, our goal is to create a gathering place that offers a genuinely delicious place to relax and experience our food,” said Daniel Hammer, vice-president of culinary development and new business for Kroger. “The restaurant will feature a made-from-scratch menu, hand-crafted cocktails and a community-centered atmosphere.”

Named for the year that Barney Kroger opened his first grocery store in Cincinnati, Kitchen 1883 is scheduled to open in Union, Ky., in late October. The restaurant will operate daily offering lunch and dinner along with brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

Kroger has been experimenting with different avenues for growth lately, including seating areas in its store where customers may grab lunch. In May, the company launched prepared meal kits in the Cincinnati area under the Prep+Pared name.
