Michigan meat processor recalling 1.8 million lbs of ground beef

DETROIT — Wolverine Packing Co. is recalling 1.8 million lbs of ground beef due to possible contamination with the pathogen E. Coli O157:H7. The products were produced between March 31 and April 18, intended for use in the food service segment and shipped to Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said the size of the recall is related to the potential contamination of additional products due to a lack of microbiological independence between lot production and a “deficiency in supportive record-keeping by distributors.”

The F.S.I.S. was notified of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses on May 12. Working in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, F.S.I.S. officials determined that there was a link between the ground beef products from Wolverine Packing Co. and the illness cluster. Based on epidemiological and trace-back investigations, 11 case-patients have been identified in four states with illness onset dates ranging from April 22 to May 2.

Wolverine Packing Co. ranks as the 30th largest meat and poultry company in North America with estimated sales of $1.6 billion, according to Meat & Poultry Magazine’s annual Top 100 ranking of the industry’s largest companies. The company has three processing plants and employs approximately 400.
