MANHATTAN BEACH, CALIF. – Beyond Meat, a 100% vegan protein product, is set to debut in retailers nationwide this summer.

In lightly seasoned, grilled and Southwest varieties, the chicken substitute contains a blend of soy and pea protein. The product is free of cholesterol, gluten, dairy, meat and egg, as well as bioengineered ingredients, hormones or antibiotics. A 3-oz serving contains 18 grams of protein.

Beyond Meat will be available in select Whole Foods stores beginning this spring with a wider release planned for July.

Some months back my local Whole Foods featured a chili dish identified as being made with Beyond Meat that was out of this world. At that time they told me it wasn't yet available to consumers, so I've eagerly been awaiting it's debut. BUT, recently I've sampled some salads and various other dishes made with Beyond Meat from the Whole Foods prepared food section, and what a let down. The wonderful Beyond Meat I remember in that chili was shaped and textured like pulled chicken breast meat, and I remember seeing news footage and photos that showed it just that way when it was first reported in the media. I don't understand why you would change it to these long, thick, uniform strips which, btw, tasted very tough and unpleasant in the recent samples I've tried at Whole Foods. I've also read comments from people that the sodium is very high in these strips. I'm afraid you ruined a good thing. If/when you start making it the original way I'll be happy to buy them, but until then, thanks, but no thanks.
