BALTIMORE — It’s a sweet beverage with an even sweeter story. Repurposed Pod’s flagship product, 100% virgin cacao juice, was created to improve the livelihoods of cacao farmers while reducing waste. The product is made by transforming the otherwise discarded fruity pulp from a cacao pod into a nutritious, lightly tart juice that may be added to cocktails, smoothies or sipped straight from the bottle.
Repurposed Pod’s cacao juice was one of many innovative beverages on display at Natural Products Expo East, held Sept. 13-16 in Baltimore. Top trends in the category include cold-brew coffee, cold-pressed juices, kombucha, functional fats and plant-based protein. Among emerging ingredients in beverages are turmeric, moringa and mushrooms, and popular claims include probiotics, no added sugar and organic.
