SEATTLE — Jones Soda Co. has created a soda sweetened with pure cane sugar. The new soda will be called Jones Pure Cane Soda and will be sold as a 12-oz can package.

By launching the new pure cane sugar sweetened soda, Jones hopes to differentiate itself in the carbonated soft drink (C.S.D.) category in which most sodas are sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). HFCS has received negative publicity of late regarding how the body processes fructose.

The company believes the switch to pure cane sugar will appeal to customers looking for an all-natural product.

"Our goal has been to differentiate Jones in the $66 billion C.S.D. category, and the addition of Pure Cane Soda helps achieve this goal by providing our customers with an indulgence that has a better taste, perceived benefits, positive perceptions, and by providing our retail partners with a clear reason to carry our products," said Peter Van Stolk, president and chief executive officer of Jones Soda.

The company is targeting the first quarter of 2007 for the product launch and has worked with National Beverage Corp., Jones Soda’s manufacturer and distributor, to ensure that the launch is on schedule, Mr. Van Stolk said.
