DALLAS — Results at Brinker International, Inc. showed modest gains in the second quarter as the company continued to expand its business.

Net income for the second quarter ended Dec. 27 rose 3% to $44,192,000, equal to 36c per share on the common stock, up from $42,877,000, or 31c per share, in the same period last year.

Net sales for the quarter totaled $1,070,587,000, an increase of 6% over $1,009,083,000 in the second quarter of 2006. Increased revenues were largely due to restaurant capacity growth of nearly 8%.

During the second quarter, the company opened 33 restaurants and its franchisees opened 17 restaurants.

"Our employees, both in our restaurants and at the home office, again this quarter demonstrated their ability to deliver improved operating results for our shareholders and execute the strategies that are driving our business forward," said Doug Brooks, chief executive officer of Brinker International.
