Policy impact on eating patterns to be explored in conference

WASHINGTON — Ways in which government policies are shaping food consumption patterns will be explored in an upcoming conference sponsored by the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"Food Product Composition and Public Health: Implications for Food Policy" will be held April 9-11 at the Claremont hotel in Berkeley, Calif. The Farm Foundation will serve as a co-sponsor of the event.

Whole grains will be a significant topic of discussion, with a review of how the release of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 may have prompted increased intake. The whole grains discussion will be led by Lisa Mancino of the E.R.S. A panel on the subject will include Suzie Crocket, director of the Bell Institute of Health & Nutrition, General Mills. Also on the panel will be Sue Bora, International Food Information Council Foundation.

In addition to whole grains, food products to be the subject of major presentations and panel discussions at the conference will be sugar, salt and trans fats. Joseph Derochowki, director of NET Business Development, will serve as keynote speaker April 9, offering a presentation on "Eating Patterns in America."

Speaking at lunch on April 10 will be Michael Jacobsen, director, Center for Science and the Public Interest. Mr. Jacobsen with speak about "Improving Public Health through New Food and Farm Policies."

As a dinner speaker, Eric Hentges will lead and industry initiatives panel. Mr. Hentges is executive director, center for nutrition policy and promotion at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
