MONTRAEL — Saputo Inc. announced it will close a fresh cookies manufacturing plant in Laval, Que., on June 29.

Saputo said 97 employees will be affected by the plant’s closing, and the plant’s functions will be integrated in with the Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce, Que., facility. The company said costs related to the closing after income taxes are $800,000, and in the fiscal 2008 year, Saputo anticipates an annual after-tax savings of around $1.1 million. Following years should experience a savings of around $1.6 million, Saputo said.

The company has decided to close the plant as a part of an initiative to improve operational efficiency. Saputo also recently announced it will close a cheese manufacturing plant in Vancouver, B.C., and a cutting and wrapping facility in Boucherville, Que., in coming months.
