KANSAS CITY — Interstate Bakeries Corp. has gone back to its roots with the widespread introduction of banana creme-filled Hostess Twinkies. Beginning this week, the products are available alongside the standard vanilla-filled Twinkies at retail outlets nationwide.

The company has reintroduced the flavor — which was the snack cakes’ original flavor from the 1930s to the 1940s — as part of limited-time promotions in the past, but until this month always had taken the product off the shelves when the promotions ended.

The move to make the flavor a permanent addition to the Twinkies lineup followed a successful sales spike that coincided with a "King Kong" movie promotion held in March 2006.

"Twinkies have been a favorite snack and icon of Americana for generations," said Kevin Kaul, marketing director for Hostess. "As the flavor that started it all, we’re excited to add banana crème-filled Twinkies to our core line of iconic treats."
