General Mills to launch carbonated yogurt

MINNEAPOLIS — General Mills, Inc. on Thursday unveiled plans to introduce a carbonated yogurt designed to appeal to older children. The new yogurt will be part of the company’s Yoplait yogurt line and will be called Fizzix.

"Product innovation is a key to Yoplait’s plan in 2008," Ken Powell, president and chief operating officer, said during a June 28 conference call. "We’re launching Yo-Plus, the first thin biotic yogurt. Yo-Plus contains prebiotic inulin with probiotic cultures to help naturally regulate digestion.

"And hot on the heels of our successful Yoplait Kid’s reformulation, we’re introducing a new drinkable version with omega-3 for brain development and we’re launching the first carbonated yogurt, a product called Fizzix.

"These new products are all priced above the Yoplait per ounce line average so they represent positive mix and we think good incremental sales potential."

General Mills also announced it will raise all yogurt prices by 4% to 6% effective July 2. The move reflects cost pressures and mirrors what is happening in dairy prices this year, the company said.
