Houston named deputy undersecretary at F.N.C.S.

WASHINGTON — Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns appointed Kate Houston as deputy undersecretary for Food Nutrition and Consumer Services. In her new job, Ms. Houston will be responsible for developing and promoting science-based dietary guidance.

Ms. Houston comes to the position from U.S.D.A.’s Food and Nutrition Service (F.N.S.), where she was deputy administrator for Special Nutrition Programs. Prior to joining F.N.S., she spent more than five years on the professional staff of the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Education and the Workforce.

While at F.N.S., Ms. Houston oversaw the administration of 14 of the nation's nutrition assistance programs, including the National School Lunch Program, the WIC Program, and the Food Distribution Program.
