HEERLEN, THE NETHERLANDS — Wuxi NutriRice Co. Ltd. will produce NutriRice, nutritionally enriched rice kernels that will be mixed with natural rice via a patented process that protects the stability of the nutrients. A joint venture between DSM and Buhler operates Wuxi NutriRice Co., a production facility in China.
Production will start in August with limited capacity, sufficient enough to enrich about 80,000 tonnes of rice. Capacity is expected to increase. Wuxi NutriRice Co. expects to roll out the NutriRice concept not only in China but eventually around the world.
The NutriRice process makes it possible to encapsulate multiple micronutrients inside the rice kernel. Vitamin A, vitamin B, iron and zinc may be included. NutriRice kernels may be adapted to the shape and length of regional rice varieties.
DSM, based in The Netherlands, has more than 70 years of experience in nutrient formulation. Buhler, based in Switzerland, offers advanced technology in grain processing and food extrusion.
