OAK BROOK, ILL. — Comparable sales for McDonald’s Corp. restaurants throughout the world increased 8.7% in May compared with 4.5% during the same month of the last year. Global system-wide sales increased 11.9% in May, or 10% in constant currencies.

Comparable sales in May for U.S. restaurants were up 7.4% from a year ago, which McDonald’s attributed to the Shrek the Third promotion, breakfast business and new products.

There was also an 8.9% increase in comparable sales in Europe and 10.2% increase in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa.

Comparable sales represent sales at all McDonald’s restaurants in operation for at least 13 months.

"May marks another month of strong sustained sales and shows how well we are providing solutions for today’s busy lifestyles, with the convenience and value that customers expect from McDonald’s," said Jim Skinner, chief executive officer. "We’ve re-energized our worldwide business with new food choices, redesigned restaurants and relevant marketing."
