Europe's backaldrin opens U.S. office

RICHMOND, VA. — backaldrin International GmbH, a European manufacturer of premium bread mixes and dough improvers, has established a U.S.-based subsidiary. Richmond-based backaldrin of America L.L.C. will handle sales and marketing functions, customer support and logistics services for the North American market.
The U.S. subsidiary plans to provide research and development and training capabilities. Bernhard Barta joined backaldrin of America as president and chief executive officer Aug. 1. He gained management experience while working for such U.S. companies as Franz Haas Machinery of America, Inc., AMF Bowling Products and Blueprint Automation Turnkey Solutions.
Based in Asten, Austria, family-owned backaldrin International GmbH produces more than 400 different baking products and improvers and also produces premixes for bread, rolls and pastries. The company had 2006-07 revenues of €105 million, or about $140 million.
Backaldrin International is known for its Kornspitz grain roll, which is sold in 59 different countries. Every day about 4.5 million Kornspitz are eaten. In the United States, backaldrin of America plans to make Kornspitz available at high-end retail stores.
