EMERYVILLE, CALIF. — Jamba Juice announced it has launched a breakfast test in New York and Los Angeles that includes juice blends and items considered to be a "meal-in-a-cup."

These products will include smoothies to be eaten with a spoon.

"Breakfast is the fastest-growing daypart in Q.S.R., a trend we expect to be very complementary to Jamba Juice’s current line-up of healthy blended beverages," said Paul Coletta, senior vice-president of market and brand development. "These new products have taken the traditional smoothie one step further, offering unique, on-the-go healthy breakfast alternatives."

The new product launch will include granola toppers, a mixture of blended fruit, low-fat yogurt and soymilk topped with crunchy organic granola; chunky smoothies, which are a blend of soymilk and non-fat yogurt with chunks of fruit and organic granola; yogurt blends, a blend of berries, nonfat yogurt and soymilk; and juice blends, which are blends of orange juice and other fruit juices.

Recent market research suggests new breakfast has significant potential in the market. According to a recent report from Technomic, the market opportunities for breakfast are underdeveloped and often lack innovation.

Servings of breakfast foods at restaurants are up 64% over the last five years, and a portion of the servings were ordered outside of normal breakfast hours, according to The NPD Group Inc., which provides consumer and retail information.
