LUFKIN, TEXAS ― Armour-Eckrich Meats, L.L.C., a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, Inc., announced it is closing its Lufkin plant and shifting its processed meats production to other facilities, effective March 14, 2008.

"This was a difficult but necessary decision to shift production to other plants," said Michael Brown, president of Armour-Eckrich. "We know that this will create adversity for the employees affected and we will be providing assistance to them to find future employment.

"This move improves our competitive position and will enhance our ability to provide outstanding products and services to our customers."
