ST. LOUIS — Panera Bread Co. said system-wide comparable bakery-cafe sales increased 0.8% for the four weeks ended Sept. 25. Year-to-date, system-wide comparable sales were up 1.6% compared with the same period a year ago.

Comparable bakery-cafe sales percentages exclude closed locations and are based on sales for bakery-cafes that have been in operation for at least 18 months, the company said.

Company-owned bakery-cafe sales increased 1.5% in the four-week period, and franchised bakery-cafe sales rose .3%. For the year they were also both up 1.6%.

Additionally, Panera announced revenue for the third quarter increased 35% to $276 million from $205 million in the third quarter of 2006. During the third quarter, 35 new bakery-cafes were opened.

The company also has adjusted its third-quarter earnings per share target to 35c to 37c, compared with its previous range of 32c to 38c.
