Sara Lee encourages lunch makeover in Calif. schools

DOWNERS GROVE, ILL. — Sara Lee Food & Beverage has launched a contest designed to boost the "grain point average" of students in Southern California and spur a switch to bread with more whole grains.
As part of a new "Sara Lee Soft & Smooth Bread Ultimate Lunch Switcheroo Contest," students in grades three through eight from the Los Angeles and San Diego area have been asked to submit essays about why their school needs a lunch makeover and a little fun brought to their lunchroom.
Two winning entries will be selected (one from Los Angeles, one from San Diego), with each winner receiving an appearance from Corbin Bleu, actor/singer/dancer, at their school to serve lunch made with Sara Lee Soft & Smooth bread.
"I can’t wait to see the creative ideas kids come up with for a lunch makeover, and I’m very honored to be chosen as the person to help bring joy to lunch in L.A. and San Diego," said Mr. Bleu, star of the Disney Channel’s "High School Musical." "Like many kids, I wasn’t that interested in nutrition and never really thought about the nutritional value of my bread. But as I’ve learned more, I’ve realized nutrition can taste great. Hopefully, this contest will show other kids that eating well can be fun and delicious."
In addition to Mr. Bleu’s visit, each winning student also will receive a $5,000 grant for his or her school and a one year supply of free Sara Lee Soft & Smooth bread. Submissions will be accepted Oct. 10 to Nov. 2 and children may enter at www.thejoyofeating.com/lunch.
"We hope the Sara Lee Soft & Smooth Bread Ultimate Lunch Switcheroo Contest will inspire families to send their kids to school with whole grain sandwiches," said Peter Reiner, vice-president, Sara Lee brands. "Kids want good taste first and foremost. If we deliver that plus have some fun with megastar Corbin Bleu, we can get kids and families in Southern California to include breads with more whole grain nutrition in their diets."
The contest is the latest in a series of initiatives undertaken by Sara Lee to promote the goodness of whole grains. Earlier this summer the company launched the Sara Lee Soft & Smooth Great Whole Grain Giveaway — a communications campaign that has dimensions of social networking, media, product sampling of 2.5 million loaves and events around the country.
