DALLAS — Preliminary second-quarter comparable sales for Brinker International, Inc. were down 2.1%, with comparable sales for Chili’s Grill & Bar down 2.4% and On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina down 4.3%.

Maggiano’s Little Italy had positive comparable sales of 1.4%. The overall results excluded the impact of Romano’s Macaroni Grill.

"It is obviously a very challenging time for our business, and we are not at all satisfied with our results," said Doug Brooks, chairman and chief executive officer. "While we are confident we are focused on the right fundamentals to deliver what our guests are looking for, we will continue to look for additional opportunities to meet our guests’ current needs and capitalize on future consumer trends."

The company estimated earnings per share from continuing operations before special items to be 30c to 31c for the quarter ended Dec. 26.

At the end of the first quarter of fiscal 2008, Brinker International owned, operated or franchised 1,827 Chili’s, Macaroni Grill, On the Border and Maggiano’s restaurants.
