Panera revenue up 29% in quarter

ST. LOUIS — Panera Bread Co. posted sales of $301 million in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 25, 2007, up 29% from $233 million in the same quarter of the previous year.

For the quarter, total system comparable bakery-cafe sales increased 1.7%. Company-owned bakery-cafe sales were up 2.6% and franchise-operated bakery-cafe sales were up 1.2%

Comparable bakery-cafe sales percentages exclude closed locations and are based on sales for bakery-cafes that have been in operation for at least 18 months, the company said.

For the four weeks ended Dec. 25, total system comparable bakery-cafe sales were up 1.2%. Franchise-operated sales were up 0.3% and company-owned sales were up 2.7%.

For the year ended Dec. 25, total system comparable bakery-cafe sales were up 1.6%. Franchise-operated sales were up 1.5% and company-owned sales were up 1.9%.
