Schwan to shutter S. Carolina specialty desserts plant

MARSHALL, MINN. — The Schwan Food Co. announced it will halt production at its specialty desserts plant in Spartanburg, S.C., in March, shifting production to the company’s dessert plant in Stillwell, Okla. The facility employs 525 workers.
The Spartanburg facility has been part of the company’s manufacturing and dessert division since Schwan acquired Mrs. Smith’s from Flowers Foods, Inc. in 2003. The facility produces many specialty dessert products, including cream pies and cakes.
Bill McCormack, Schwan’s senior vice-president, said the decision to close the plant reflected Schwan’s need to be more efficient as it faces global competition.
Mr. McCormack said Schwan will offer all the employees positions at other plants, or help them get other jobs.
Schwan said it is consolidating production at other plants. Earlier this month, the company sold a bakery building in Suwanee, Ga., to Flowers Foods.
