Acquiring an interest in InterMed Discovery GmbH, Dortmund, Germany, and signing a cooperation agreement will allow Cognis, Monheim, Germany, to strengthen its portfolio of natural source products and compounds, according to Cognis. InterMed has one of the world’s largest natural product data bases and potential active ingredients for specific applications in functional foods, dietary supplements, and personal and home care products.

InterMed correlates chemical structures with biological activity on a large scale ("IMD Bioprofiling") and thus identifies novel active ingredients with defined applications. Working with InterMed, Cognis will use the database and technology to select, develop and market suitable active substances exclusively.

"The combination of InterMed Discovery’s natural product data and active ingredients and Cognis’ know-how and market expertise in nutrition and cosmetics creates a unique platform for the development of new, innovative products and thus strengthens our market position sustainably," said Norbert Weitkemper, director of Strategic Business Development Nutrition & Health for Cognis.
