Kellogg closing cheese manufacturing plant in Ohio

BATTLE CREEK, MICH. — The Fremont Dairy, a Kellogg Co. cheese manufacturing plant located in Fremont, Ohio, will be closed in the middle of 2008, Kellogg confirmed last week.
That the plant was slated for closing was first disclosed by Kellogg in early 2006. The facility produces cheese for the Cheez-It cracker brand, said Kris Charles, vice-president of global communications at Kellogg.
"Capacity at the plant is insufficient to meet our demand for cheese," Ms. Charles said. "The Fremont plant cannot be easily expanded because of a number of factors, including from an adjacent land perspective."
Ms. Charles said Brewster Dairy, based in Brewster, Ohio, will take over production from the Fremont plant. The Fremont facility was acquired by Kellogg in 2001 as part of the acquisition of Keebler Foods Co. Ms. Charles said the 27,000-square-foot facility, which has been sold by Kellogg in recent weeks, is more than 70 years old.
She said the 50 salaried and hourly employees at the facility have received retention incentives, severance packages and outplacement service.
