TORONTO — Based on consumer demand for its organic soy beverages, SunOpta is expanding its vertically integrated operations system.

The company is set to complete the expansion of its packaging facility in Alexandria, Minn., in May. The update includes additional processing and packaging capabilities and is expected to expand capacity by 25%, bringing total capacity to more than 125 million liters per year.

In addition, SunOpta recently completed upgrades to its soybase processing facility in Heuvelton, N.Y. It also finalized supply agreements to provide organic soybase to a Mexican dairy with plans to launch an organic soymilk product locally.

The company’s vertically integrated soymilk model includes soybean sourcing through packaged products to ensure optimal quality control and meet organic certification standards.
