MINNEAPOLIS — General Mills, Inc. will honor Olympians Nastia Liukin and Bryan Clay on boxes of Wheaties in recognition of their gold-medal winning performances in gymnastics and the decathlon, respectively, at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Ms. Liukin became only the third American woman to win the gold medal in the gymnastics all-around competition, joining Mary Lou Retton and Carly Patterson, both of whom also appeared on Wheaties following their Olympic performance.
In addition to her gold in the all-around competition, Ms. Liukin won silver medals in the team competition, the individual uneven bars and balance beam, as well as a bronze medal in the floor exercise.
Mr. Clay became the first American since Dan O’Brien in 1996 to win gold in the decathlon. He joins Mr. O’Brien, Jim Thorpe and Bruce Jenner as decathlon gold medalists who have appeared on the Wheaties box.
"Having your picture on the Wheaties box is something all athletes strive for," Mr. Clay said. "It’s a mark of distinction that says you’ve reached the pinnacle of your career. This is a very special honor for me."
