LAS VEGAS — Cognis Nutrition & Health launched Betatene 10% WDP, a high concentration of algae-based beta-carotene in a water dispersible powder, on Oct. 22 at SupplySide West in Las Vegas. The colorant from a natural source is intended for use in functional food and beverage applications.
"Consumers are increasingly concerned about the health risks of certain synthetic colorants prompting food manufacturers to find alternative sources of natural colors," said Rob Bailey, marketing manager for Cognis Nutrition & Health. "As the world’s leading producer of algae-based natural beta-carotene, Cognis offers a broad product line for applications, including beverages, confectionery, gravies and sauces, and dairy."
Scientific studies suggest betatene offers such health benefits as eye health, providing protection against the sun’s rays and immunity, according to Cognis. The body converts beta-carotene to vitamin A as needed.
According to Cognis, the following structure-function claims may be possible based on clinical evidence:
● helps improve skin hydration and elasticity
● improves skin moisture
● helps reduce ultraviolet (UV) damage from sunlight
● helps to maintain skin’s healthy look and feel.
