COPENHAGEN, DENMARK — Dansico’s Howaru probiotics should come in straws next year after Unistraw International granted Danisco worldwide exclusivity for the sale and marketing of Unistraw’s straw concept for use with Howaru probiotics.
"The Howaru Straws are proving to be a convenient dry format, ideal for ensuring the delivery of a highly stable dose of probiotic live bacteria, without requiring chilled storage or distribution," said Fabienne Saadane-Oaks, president of Danisco BioActives,
While the straws should be launched in 2009, Copenhagen-based Danisco will show prototypes at its booth at SupplySide West in Las Vegas Oct. 22-24 and at Health ingredients Europe in Paris Nov. 4-6.
Unistraw International, based in Australia, already offers Sippah Milk Flavoring Straws that incorporate flavors through the Unistraw Delivery System, which also will be used to incorporate Howaru probiotics in the straws.
Unistraw International last month signed a global agreement with Tetra Pak, Lausanne, Sweden, for a patented on-pack straw drinking system that may deliver probiotics in milk, other dairy products and juice. The Unistraw system stores the probiotics in the straw in the form of dry, stable UniBeads that are held in place by filters at both ends of the straw. The UniBeads dissolve as liquid is sipped through the straw. Since the probiotics are in the straw, the beverage products need no refrigeration and have a shelf life of up to 12 months.
