BUCHAREST, ROMANIA — Kraft Foods Inc. said it plans to close its factory in Transylvania, Romania, next year and move some production to Bulgaria. The company manufactures chocolate bars at the plant under the Poiana and Africana brands.
Doina Cavache, corporate affairs manager for Kraft, said Kraft will lay off 440 employees by 2009 in connection with the closing. She said the closing reflects the company’s inability to expand in Romania and is not due to the global economic crisis.
Kraft Foods Romania took over the factory in the Transylvanian city of Brasov in 1994. Built in 1903, it is Romania’s oldest chocolate manufacturing plant. Kraft Food Romania had sales of approximately $175 million last year.
