ATLANTA — AHD International will distribute chia meal, chia oil and chia powder through an exclusive deal with The Chia Co., a chia grower in Australia. AHD will provide a range of offerings to functional food makers, nutritional supplement manufacturers and grocery outlets.
Chia seeds are gluten-free and rich in omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids (EFAs), dietary fiber, antioxidants, calcium, protein, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, according to AHD International. They are stable because of their antioxidant content and will not compromise the shelf life of finished goods.
"With the addition of these three new sources to obtain chia’s studied EFA, antioxidant and dietary fiber health benefits, AHD can provide our manufacturers with even more ways to incorporate chia into supplements, baked goods, nutrition bars, cereals, soups, seasonings, dressings and beverages," said John Alkire, president of Atlanta-based AHD International.
Chia (Salvia hispanica) was part of the diet of the Mayans and Aztecs in Mexico as far back as 3,500 B.C., according to The Chia Co., owned and operated by Australian farmers. Earlier this decade The Chia Co. farmers started growing chia under irrigation from the Ord River in the Kimberley region of Australia. The Chia Co. sells chia products under the Chiatah brand.
