Flowers Foods' Fort Smith Baking Co. to close Jan. 2

FORT SMITH, ARK. — The Fort Smith Baking Co., a subsidiary of Flowers Foods, Inc., announced it will cease operations on Jan. 2.

The baking facility, which was reopened in May after being closed since August 2006, produced specialty bread products under the Nature’s Own and Cobblestone Mill brands for shipment to Florida. But according to Flowers, the facility became expendable following the company’s August acquisition of ButterKrust Bakery in Lakeland, Fla.

The Fort Smith Baking Co., formerly the Shipley Baking Co., was acquired by Flowers in 1996 and produced boxed bread until 2006. It was reopened in May of this year to produce specialty bread.
