ST. LOUIS — The Solae Co. announced it is changing all its product packaging to brown kraft paper bags from bleached white bags as part of a larger effort to reduce its environmental footprint.

Kraft paper is similar to the paper used in grocery store bags and is a 100% biodegradable natural product. According to Solae, the pulp used in the bags is not bleached to ensure minimum chemical processing.

"At Solae, we are actively pursuing a variety of efforts to reduce our environmental footprint to provide more valuable solutions for our customers," said Michele Fite, vice-president of global strategy and marketing.

Solae said the bags will be available beginning this month, with full packaging transitioned to the new bags by July 2009.
