I.F.T. exhibitors to offer tasty teas and soup

In less than two months the "Best of Food Thinking 2009," the Institute of Food Technologists’ annual meeting and food exposition, will take place June 6-9 in Anaheim, Calif. Exhibitors already have plans under way for their booths:


Booth No. 1347

D.D. Williamson, Louisville, Ky., and colorMaker, Anaheim, will share a booth and feature mango iced tea colored with certified organic caramel color; a juice drink colored with natural beta-carotene; hard candies colored with red cabbage, turmeric and red beet; and cookies frosted with natural coloring.

The two companies also will host the symposia "Coloring Options from Natural Sources" June 8. Ron Wrolstad and colorMaker’s Gabe Lauro will moderate. Speakers include

Jennifer Guild, global food science and regulatory manager for D.D. Williamson; Jody Renner-Nantz, food science chemist for D.D. Williamson; Stephen Lauro, president of colorMaker; and Ellen Bradley, a freelance writer.

Ms. Renner-Nantz will present the oral session "Heat and light stability of naturally derived red colorings for beverages" on June 9.

Booth No. 1409

Grain Processing Corp., Muscatine, Iowa, will feature its starches, maltodextrin and corn bran in products offered at its booth.

A variety of soups will highlight the thickening and stabilizing properties of Pure-Gel stabilized starches. Additional lines of specialty starches available from GPC include Inscosity cold water-swelling starches, Pure-Cote film-forming starches and Pure-Dent absorbent starches. Pure-Cote starch and Maltrin maltodextrin will be the featured ingredients in a variety of California almond snacks.

Organic lemonade at the booth will be made with Maltrin OR organic rice maltodextrin. A high-protein beverage demonstrating the clean flavor profile and dispersion properties of Maltrin QD (quickly dispersing) maltodextrin also will be available. TruBran corn bran will provide the fiber in a high-fiber bar, which also will feature Incscosity instant food starch for retaining moisture and extending shelf life.

Booth No. 1135

Virginia Dare, Brooklyn, N.Y., has leveraged its vanilla extraction technology to develop and expand its product portfolio to include a line of tea extracts and concentrates. Virginia Dare will offer various tea beverages, including flavored tea lattes, floral flavored iced tea and tea-based smoothies, at its booth. Assorted scones, muffins and cookies also will be on the menu.

Booth No. 801

Proliant, Inc., Ankeny, Iowa, will give a presentation on ImmunoLin, an immunoglobulin concentrate ingredient, on June 8 in Room 201AB. The Food and Drug Administration said last December that it had no questions about studies showing the ingredient was Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for use as an ingredient in dairy, fruit juices, snack foods, beverages and meal replacement products at a maximum level of use not to exceed 50 grams per kilogram (5%) in the finished food product. The ingredient already was used in the dietary supplement industry.

ImmunoLin may address the health issues of immune compromise, over-activation of the immune system and gut barrier dysfunction, according to the company. A lack of immunity and gut barrier dysfunction both may contribute to gut-associated inflammation.
