Foster Farms to acquire ConAgra food service brands

LIVINGSTON, CALIF. — Foster Farms has reached agreement with Omaha-based ConAgra Foods, Inc. to acquire the latter’s Fernando’s and El Extremo food service brands. Financial terms of the transaction, which is expected to close next week, were not disclosed.

Fernando’s has specialized in food service Mexican items for more than 25 years with a full line of authentic Mexican entrees and appetizers ready to heat and serve. Fernando’s products include hand-rolled burritos, taquitos, mini tacos and enchiladas.

El Extremo also is a food service, frozen Mexican brand, and serves the school lunch program distribution channel.

"This acquisition is a strategic fit for Foster Farms and will give us capabilities to expand our current businesses in the food service, retail and C-store channels," said Ron Foster, president and chief executive officer of Foster Farms.

In addition to the brands, Foster Farms will acquire a manufacturing facility in Compton, Calif. The plant is used exclusively to produce handheld Mexican products under the Fernando’s and El Extremo brands and will remain operational.

Founded in 1939, Foster Farms specializes in fresh, all-natural chicken and turkey products. The company also produces pre-marinated, ready-to-cook and fully cooked products for retailers, warehouse clubs and food service customers.
