GARNER, N.C. — The roof of a ConAgra Foods, Inc. plant in Garner has collapsed following an explosion. Three people were said to be trapped inside the building as of mid-afternoon, and 21 people have been taken to area hospitals for injuries ranging from burns to smoke inhalation, according to the Associated Press. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
The 50,000-square-foot plant, the only facility in the nation to produce Slim Jim meat products, employs about 900 people covering four shifts. Three hundred people were said to be in the facility at the time of the explosion.
"The company is cooperating with local authorities to determine the scope of the incident and the extent of any injuries, and is sending a team of experts from the company to the facility," ConAgra said. "Our first priority is the safety and health of our employees and the local community."
ConAgra acquired the facility in 1998 as part of its purchase of GoodMark Foods.
