Robb, Gallo promoted at Whole Foods

AUSTIN, TEXAS — The board of directors of Whole Foods Market, Inc. has promoted Walter Robb and A.C. Gallo to new executive roles within the company. Mr. Robb and Mr. Gallo have shared the roles of president and chief operating officer since October 2004.
Mr. Robb has been named co-chief executive officer, along with co-founder John Mackey. Mr. Robb, who also has been named to the company’s board of directors, joined Whole Foods in 1991, and was named to the executive team as executive vice-president of operations in 2001. He was promoted to co-chief operating officer in 2003 and co-president in 2004.
Mr. Gallo will now take over as the company’s sole president and c.o.o. He joined Whole Foods in 1992, when the company acquired Bread & Circus, a company for which Mr. Gallo worked for 15 years. In 1994, he was promoted to vice-president of the Northeast region, and two years later was named president. He joined the executive team as executive vice-president of operations in 2001. He was promoted to co-c.o.o. in 2003 and co-president in 2004.
“Walter and A.C. are brilliant retailers, and their contributions to Whole Foods Market’s success have been immeasurable,” Mr. Mackey said. “Due in large part to their operational leadership, we successfully managed through 2009, the most difficult year in our company’s 30-year history.”
